Lake Toya, Hokkaido
Lake Toya is located in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park in the northern part (Hokkaido) of Japan. It is the result of volcanic activity which is still observed. When I was there I could witness the extremely low-frequent sound waves of an eruption.
In Chitose (Sapporo) we could find our famous Dutch friend Miffy”
Tokyo
Shibuya crossing in Tokyo is one of the most busy crossings in the world and has the 12 stories high shopping center Shibuya 109. The seconsd picture is the Senso-ji tempel in Asakusa. Asakusa also has the Ueno zoo which has penguins. More Japan pictures are on the photo page.

Old houses in Takayama in the Japanese Alps. The trip to Kanazawa gives a beatiful view on those Alps.
The Kenroku-en garden in Kanazawa is seen as one of the most beautiful gardens of Japan. Next to it is the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art whaving a very accessible collection.
Kyoto and Nara, Japan
In Kyoto the Gion area is an absolute must with the Shimbashi street. Also the Monkey park and the bamboo forrest are worth visiting. Nara has the parks with deers and the giant Buddha.
Hiroshima, Japan
The monuments in the atomic bomb memorial park are impressive, especially the childrens monument with the crane birds. From Hiroshima an intersting excursion is to Miyajima island with the floating Torii and deers just like in Nara.
Ogasawara Islands, Japan
The Ogasawara Islands (also called "Bonin Islands"), can only be reached by a boat trip of 25 hours to the south from Tokyo. It is a volcanic archipel which is completely isolated. Therefore the nature is untouched and sometimes endemic. We stayed in the youth hostel in Chichijima which is a very nice experience.

China
Shanghai
Contrasts like old/new and poor/rich are nowhere as large as in Shanghai. This picture is taken from the Kerry Everbright city (close to the central trainstation). On the horizon there is the Pudong area with the extremely large Jin Mao building.
Although skyscrapers can be seen in any direction as far as you can see, in between there are the old areas with traditional markets. However, the new buildings are coming closer and closer and will replace the poorer areas soon.
Hangzhou
Hangzhou in China (not so far from Shanghai), is called the heaven on earth.
